When I was eight years old, I discovered something magical on the curb outside my house.

I would stand on the street and hop one foot onto the curb, then the other. Back and forth. Left foot, right foot. Over and over. It was the simplest movement imaginable, but I could do it for hours. Literally hours.

I wasn’t exercising. I wasn’t playing a game. I was somewhere else entirely, transported into another part of my being. Time vanished. My thoughts grew quiet. When I finally stopped, breathless and exhilarated, life felt enormous, exciting, and full of possibility.

As a young teenager, I found the same magic in a swimming pool. I’d push off from the bottom, burst up for air, and sink back down again. Up and down, up and down. It’s called bobbing, and was initially a way to teach new swimmers not to be afraid to go underwater.

But I loved bobbing because it took me to another realm. The lifeguards would eventually come over and gently suggest I get out of the pool for a while because I’d been bobbing for so long, they were starting to worry. But I didn’t want to stop. I was in it. That delicious state where everything felt right, alive, and effortless.

I didn’t realize at the time, but in both instances, I had entered a mystical realm through a moving meditation that my body loved. I was connecting with the universe and communicating with my soul, feeling full of joy. Looking back on my life, I see that I’ve constantly sought ways to experience that feeling again and again.

Recently, I came across the phrase “Inner Angel” to describe our soul-self, higher-self, or divine essence, whatever words you prefer. I love this term because spiritual language can often feel too abstract or complicated to understand, but everyone knows what an angel is: devoted, loving, protective, and always present.

So this morning, I used a simple technique I teach my clients called “Ask My Heart.” I placed my hand over my heart and asked, “Does the term Inner Angel delight my soul?” I received an unequivocal yes, so this is the term I am personally using now to describe my living soul, because I can have a relationship with my Inner Angel, talk to it, and enjoy its companionship.

Inner Angel might not be the right language for everyone, but for those who feel that YES when they ask their own hearts, it opens an instant doorway to a deeply gratifying relationship. Easy. Accessible. Intimate.

Your Inner Angel has been with you your whole life. It’s the part of you that knew things before you could explain them. The part that made you stop and stare at the sky as a child. The part that whispered “yes” or “no” before your thinking mind could catch up. The part that filled you with inexplicable joy when you were doing something simple, hopping on a curb, bobbing in a pool, drawing with crayons, spinning in circles until you fell down laughing.

You didn’t call it your Inner Angel then. You might not have called it anything. You just knew that something inside you felt vitally alive.

But as childhood gives way to adulthood, many of us stop listening.

We learn to be productive rather than to be transported. We made ourselves believe that hopping on a curb for hours was a waste of time. That bobbing in a pool looked strange. That staring at clouds was impractical. Life became about tasks, to-do lists, and meeting expectations.

The Inner Angel, patient, devoted, eternal, folded its wings and waited.

But here’s what I know after years of working with sensitive, empathic people who have been on long personal growth journeys: Your Inner Angel never left. It’s still here, still devoted to your well-being. Still longing to fill you with that sense of aliveness you felt as a child. And now you can have a conscious relationship with your Inner Angel and fully embody the joy of connection.

It’s been in conversation with you all along, but you may have forgotten its voice.

It speaks through your intuition. Through sudden “gut feelings.” Through shivers down your spine. Through unexpected sparks of inspiration. Through that inexplicable sense of rightness or wrongness that arrives before logic can explain it.

Your Inner Angel has traveled with you through lifetimes. It knows your history better than you do. It has a perspective you don’t have access to. And it loves you with a patience that is literally eternal.

There can be no better friend than your Inner Angel.

But here’s the beautiful, essential truth: It’s up to you to invite the relationship. You have free will. Your Inner Angel won’t force itself on you. It waits for your invitation, for your willingness to say yes to this most intimate of companionships.

I invite you to ask yourself…

What transports you?

What makes time seem to disappear?

What fills you with that feeling of being completely, vibrantly alive?

It might be different now than it was when you were eight. It might be music, hiking, cooking, writing, or working with your hands. It could be something you haven’t done in years because you decided it was frivolous or impractical.

Your Inner Angel speaks through whatever lights you up, through whatever makes you pause, breathe, and feel connected to something bigger than your daily worries.

Pay attention to that.

This is your opportunity to begin a more embodied relationship with all that is divine in you.

Notice. Appreciate. Invite.

Put your hand over your heart and ask: “Does the term Inner Angel delight my soul?”

Listen for the answer.

That’s your Inner Angel speaking.
